It’s 2023. Some of us leaped in, some slid in, some dragged our feet . . . some stepped in backwards. Some with ease, some with angst, some with delight. However you made it to January 2023—yeah, you did it! We did it!
I wonder how many of us feel pride in being here, in showing up for the future that is blooming now. I wonder how many of us feel gloomy for the present slipping into future. Perhaps like me, you zigzag between these feels. Consider: honor whatever energies are running through you and allow them to keep moving (not get stuck).
Looking ahead, this lifts me: two anthologies launch at the end of the month. I’m excited for you to read “When the Web Went Down” in Bioluminescent (edited by Justine Norton-Kertson, Android Press, January 2023). Publishers Weekly hailed my story in this first ever lunarpunk anthology above that of fellow contributor Neil Gaiman—got a kick out of that! My dear friend and mentor, Starhawk, has a story in the anthology as well.
“When the Web Went Down” is full of mycorrhizae and magic! Also, it brings to life a cooperative, interconnected, solarpunk future.
My essay “Sprinkling Magic in the Mundane” is part of Honoring the Wild: Reclaiming Witchcraft and Environmental Activism (edited by Irisanya Moon, Moon Books, February 2023). You’ll get a feel for our global, activist, antiracist, ecofeminist, nonhierarchic tradition as you peruse the stories and magic in the book.
You can read my story “Maybe We Are All Witches” on the Solarpunk Magazine website now. Though consider subscribing to support more stories, essays, and poems coming your way through the year.
Hope you like my doodle, above. I created it for my latest article on the Center for Sustainable Futures website: “Writing for the Future.”
February brings us SpiralHeart’s Convergence. I’ll be offering a workshop on Saturday, February 11th (Sunday in Australia and Asia) with Lilo Assenci: Between the Worlds is In the World. Check out the many wonderful offerings and rituals during the two week online Convergence. Consider registering—sliding scale begins at US$40.
Writing this post to share what’s on my horizon boosts my spirits on this rather dreary Northeast Turtle Island day.
I hope you find lovely ways to boost and feed your spirit in the coming year.
Fruitful 2023 you all!
