I am a Solarpunk Witch. Solarpunk is great shorthand for how I live and describes my magic, writing, and teaching.
My stories and the tools and experiences I share via my teaching are my progeny. Through solarpunk, I trust I’ve inspired more people than I know. It warms my heart when folx mention my work and how it affects them. I had such conversations with several people at SpiralHeart Witchcamp in July. It’s wonderful to note folx jumping into solarpunk.
We need more solarpunks.
Directly following Witchcamp, I led a workshop for over fifty elementary school teachers in New York City. We imagined the just, regenerative futures we most desire, shared those visions, and explored how such an exercise can be incorporated in pedagogy. Yeah for bringing solarpunk into classrooms as many of them now plan to do!
How do I incorporate solarpunk in my magic?
In no particular order:
Connecting with the Living Web Mycellium, mycorrhizal networks Lifting community and collaboration Honoring and developing relationships with allies through all the worlds Magic towards justice and dismantling white supremacy Nonhuman kin are people Consent Inclusion "I am my own spiritual authority, rooted in community" Exploring kinship and allyship In service to just, regenerative futures Action following intention Coherence We, together.
An example: we explored Power during one ritual I co-led this summer. How we navigate the world with it, how we hold it, how we express it. Forty people doing their individual walk, striding with purpose, round and round. But we found that these solo journeys, even as we were all doing this at the same time, would not lead us from the self-imposed maze we created. The solution? We formed a human web, joining hands and arms. We found support and resilience in this form. Sighs of relief abounded. Together, we were able to dissolve the maze and move on. The power of We.
Solarpunk is all about collaboration and working in the Commons. No one person defines the vibe. So join me at the 2nd annual Climate Fiction Conference online October 7-8, 2023 (Turtle Island timezones) where I will moderate a panel on Solarpunk Witchcraft. You’ll hear five voices adding to the conversation: what we mean by the identity and how solarpunk affects our practice.
[Soon I’ll be sending out a newsletter with thoughts on coherent magic, upcoming gigs, and story announcements. Teaser: a September in-person offering, a November online offering, and another forthcoming solarpunk story.]
