This is Samhaintide in the northern hemisphere, a time when we work with our Ancestors. For the first time in ritual, I clearly heard the voices of Descendants (of spirit). What a gift!
Even those of us who do not have blood-related offspring have Descendants: those we’ve touched through the years. For me, it’s mostly through my writing and teaching. Descendants thanked me for creating a tangible place of community, connection, and reciprocal relationship with the land. They thanked me for understanding the wide notion of kin, including non-humans with whom we share the Earth. Their words moved me to tears.
Their words motivated me to keep creating the future I vision, the one they thanked me for.
What do your Descendants ask of you? How will you be a good Ancestor, the one they need? What do they thank you for? What’s your trajectory towards the future they need?
You might ask your Ancestors (of blood, spirit, or craft) for guidance on making this so.
Meanwhile, my solarpunk friend on Mastodon translated my story “Maybe We Are All Witches” for Extinction Rebellion – Spain. They posted the Spanish version today. What a lovely surprise! And so relevant for this season: my main character discovers the writings of an Ancestor of Spirit, which helps them be a teacher of young ones (Descendants).
Many of you are in the southern hemisphere celebrating Beltane—fertility, creating anew, the growing season. A good time to work with Descendants. So from Samhain to Beltane: blessed be we future Ancestors!
