Rivers, lakes, ecosystems, wild rice, the animal kingdom, and other elements of Nature are people. The right of Nature to exist, to regenerate, to maintain its identity and integrity as a self-regulating and interrelated being: this is being declared and upheld around the world.
Water, Air, Earth protectors are finding Earth jurisprudence, the Rights of Nature, an important tool, and have successfully entered such decisions into law. The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) is an excellent resource for learning more about worldwide efforts. This map blooms with more and more dots showing places where Nature’s rights have been affirmed. The excerpt of the map, below, shows only two of the world’s continents. I hope you’ll explore further.
According Nature rights does not detract from human rights. We are part of the interrelated web of life that is Nature. Environmental justice includes human’s rights to clean water, clean air, healthy soil, healthy ecosystems. In fact, the only rights curtailed by rights and personhood accorded to Nature are those of corporations. You may know that corporations are considered people in the eyes of the law and accorded the right to sustain themselves–a right that detracts from Nature’s rights (including human rights).
In addition to GARN, you may wish to peruse Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund’s (CELDF) site and the rich resources depicted on both.
May Nature and Earth Protectors around the world thrive!
